History and structure

Theodosius Florentini, portrait mid 19th century

Capuchin Father Theodosius Florentini (1808–1865) founded the congregation of the Sisters Teaching of the Holy Cross in 1844 with his sister Bernarda Heimgartner . The initially five sisters were active as teachers in the school service. From 1902 to 1985 they ran the St. Raphael Clinic in Küsnacht in the Zurich diaspora . A prominent member of the order was Sister Pascalina Lehnert , the housekeeper Pius XII.

In 1855, Father Theodosius Florentini acquired the Nigg'schen Hof in Central Switzerland, a farm on a hill in Ingenbohl on Lake Lucerne. The monastery community formed there was separated from the Menzing people by an episcopal decision in 1856 and thus the independent institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross , Ingenbohl Sisters for short, with the Ingenbohl Monastery as the motherhouse, was created.

Today there are branches on all continents. On December 31, 2005, the order had 2,132 sisters in 244 houses. 138 sisters work in Germany (2013).
