The Schwetzinger Sand describes a natural sub-unit (224.1) of the main unit Neckar-Rhine Plain (224) within the Upper Rhine Plain . It extends on a low terrace that is narrow in west-east direction, delimiting the Speyer lowlands with the Rhine to the east , from the south between Ketsch (W) and Oftersheim (O) via Brühl (W) and Schwetzingen (O) to the north extends into the south-eastern Mannheim districts of Rheinau (W) and Friedrichsfeld (O).
In this area there are numerous fields of drift sand and inland dunes placed on the gravel of the low terrace , which can be up to 10 meters high in the north. They are partly covered by special forest formations, primarily pine forests , but are also used intensively as industrial areas and for agricultural purposes - often through special crops (such as asparagus or tobacco ).
