features

The mosquitoes have a body length of 4.0 to 5.0 millimeters. The body and wings are black, the intersegmental skins on the abdomen are bright yellow in color. The cells on the wing edge have groups of small bristles. The wing vein M2 is strongly curved "S" -shaped. The stem of the vein is shorter than its fork. The species can only be distinguished from at least two other species of the genus Sciaria on the basis of genital morphological studies.

Way of life and distribution

The animals are widespread and common in Europe. The adults fly in July and August and are very common locally, especially on umbellifers . The larvae also develop in flower pots.
