Solanum cylindricum is a species of the genus nightshade ( Solanum ) inthe nightshade family (Solanaceae).

description

Solanum cylindricum is a shrub about 1 to 2 m (rarely up to 5 m) high . The branches are hairless to densely hairy with unbranched or tree-like branched trichomes . The branched trichomes are often long-stemmed and provided with three or more terminal rays. The sympodial units usually have four or more leaves . The leaf blades are 3 to 12.5 cm long and 0.5 to 3.5 cm wide. The ratio of length to width is between 2: 1 and 10: 1. The leaves are simple, elliptical-ovate to narrowly elliptical or lanceolate. Towards the front they are pointed or pointed, at the base they are wedge-shaped until they run down. Occasionally they are provided with one or two small lobes at the base so that they are almost spear-shaped. The surface is paper-like to almost paper-like, hairless to moderately hairy on the upper side, hairless to densely hairy on the underside with simple or branched trichomes. The hair is thicker along the edges and along the veins. The leaf stalks are 0.3 to 2.5 cm long and sparsely to densely hairy.

The inflorescences are unbranched or simply branched and contain one to 15 flowers . The inflorescence stalk is 0.5 to 3.5 cm long, the inflorescence axis is up to 3 cm long. The flower stalks are 5 to 15 (rarely up to 20) cm long and are almost fused together or are about 1 to 15 mm apart. They are thickened at the base. The inflorescence is hairless to dense with unbranched, forked or tree-like branched trichomes and occasionally with short-stemmed glandular trichomes.

The calyx is sparsely to densely hairy and measures 2 to 9 mm in diameter. It is covered with calyx lobes that are 1 to 6 mm long, 1 to 2 mm wide, have a triangular to narrow triangular shape and often suddenly narrow towards the tip and are pointed to pointed. The crown is purple or white with a lighter or darker star in the middle. It is paper-like and star-shaped and measures 8 to 13 mm in diameter. The corolla tube is 2 to 3 mm long. The corolla lobes are 5 to 10 mm long and 2 to 4 mm wide at the base. They are triangular to narrow triangular and pointed towards the front. The outside is sparsely to densely covered with unbranched or branched trichomes, the inside is hairless except for a few hairs along the central veins. The anthers are usually bent together, yellow, lanceolate to narrow, elongated and 4 to 6 mm long and 1.5 to 2 mm wide. The outside is very fine and inconspicuously covered with scaly papillae . The pores are directed outwards. The ovary is hairless. The stylus is glabrous to slightly hairy, cylindrical and 5 to 6 mm long, and 0.5 mm by measuring. The scar is cut off or almost head-shaped.

The fruits are 1.5 to 2.5 cm long and 0.8 to 2 cm in diameter. They are spherical, elliptical or ovate-pear-shaped and are blunt or pointed at the tip. The surface is hairless, stone cells do not appear. The seeds are 2 to 2.5 cm long and 2 mm wide, lenticular and hairy on the edge, but otherwise hairless.

Occurrence and locations

The species occurs in southeastern Brazil and Argentina in clearings of the Araucaria forest at altitudes between 300 and 1000 m.

Systematics
