Science of the Total Environment is a peer-reviewed scientific journal that has been published by Elsevier since 1972 . The editors-in-chief are Damià Barceló and Jay Gan .

The journal publishes multidisciplinary original research on topics that investigate influences on different spheres of the earth. These include the atmosphere , the hydrosphere , the biosphere , the lithosphere and the anthroposphere . Only works that cover at least two of these spheres will be accepted. In addition, field studies are preferred over laboratory results.
