Mathis Haug

Mathis Haug (born June 22, 1976 in Pforzheim ) is a German folk , jazz and blues musician living in France .

Live and act

Haug grew up in the Black Forest until he was six . In 1982 his family moved with him to the Ardèche region in the south of France , where he spent the rest of his childhood. Between 1990 and 1994 he made his first musical attempts in bars and at festivals, mainly influenced by German folk and American blues. After that he went back to Germany for some time to work with musicians like Fanda Boom Boom and Mat Robert and the Space Foxes .

In 1999 Mathis returned to France and initially collaborated with various musicians such as Ted Tunnicliffe before founding the band Mathis and the Mathematiks in 2003 with school friend and guitarist Seamus Taylor. The first commercial album 5 , which emerged from this project, is stylistically influenced by funk , rhythm'n'blues , Afro-American music and analog effects of the 1960s. During a two-year stay in Barcelona (2002 to 2004), Mathis moved into the focus of press and audience, the single 4.4.2 was in the national charts and was the official song of the Beefeater In-Edit Festival . During this time Mathis won the Talent Jazz Award of the Jazz Festival Vienne in France and appeared on various compilations such as the Blues Beat Sessions. In 2005 5 was published in France; Reviews in well-known music magazines such as Rolling Stone and Crossroads followed, and the single ran on the French broadcaster France Inter .

The album Playing my Dues was released in 2011, followed by Distance in 2013 , released on the French blues-rock label Dixiefrog . Here Mathis worked with the saxophonist Celine Bonacina , the guitarist and singer Eric Bibb and the drummer Stephan Notari. Mathis has also been working as a producer for some time, for example for the 2015 album Sacred Seeds by Pura Fé and Zarabi by the Moroccan singer Oum. Also in 2015 he appeared as guitarist and singer on Jean-Jacques Milteau's DVD What's that Sound? with whom he already worked on his album Distance .
