Scleromystax is a genus from the family of callichthyidae (Callichthyidae). It occurs in numerous Brazilian coastal rivers from southern Bahia to southern Santa Catarina . The genus was established in 1864 by the German zoologist Albert Günther as a sub-genus of Callichthys , was givengenus status in 1888 by the American ichthyologist couple Rosa Smith Eigenmann and Carl H. Eigenmann , was later synonymous with Corydoras and has been an independent genus again since 2003.

features

Scleromystax species are 5.5 to 10 cm long and have a slimmer appearance than the other armored catfish genera. Their coloring is characterized by a striking pattern of stripes or spots. In the males, the preoperculum and gill cover are provided with odontodes . The genus is diagnostically distinguished from other armored catfish genera by the morphology of the skull bones, and from the genus Aspidoras additionally by the shorter ossified section of the pectoral spine, which is longer than half the length of the first branched pectoral fin ray.
