Scolichthys is a genus of viviparous toothcarps comprising two species. The distribution of the species is limited to a few upper rivers in the Guatemalan Alta Verapaz department.
features
They are representatives of the viviparous toothcarps that remain small. The larger species, Scolichthys greenwayi , can reach a length of up to 5 cm, Scolichthys iota grows to a maximum of 3.5 cm. In both species the males remain significantly smaller than females. A thorn-shaped appendage at the tip of the gonopodium is typical of the genus .
distribution
Both species have so far only been detected in Guatemala in the Alta Verapaz department. Scolichthys greenwayi inhabits the upper reaches of the Río Chixoy . Scolichthys iota is only known from the Río Chajmayic .
Systematics
The fish resemble the members of the tribe Cnesterodontini with the genera Cnesterodon , Phalloceros and Phallotorynus , which are only known from southeastern South America. Because of this geographical isolation, Rosen placed the genus in its own tribe Scolichthyini in its first description . Molecular genetic studies suggest that Scolichthys is closely related to Carlhubbsia .
