Scoliodon macrorhynchos is a species in the genus of the spade-nosed sharks ( Scoliodon ) within the Requiem sharks (Carcharhinidae). The species was described in 1852 by the Dutch doctor and ichthyologist Bleeker , but later synonymous with the Scoliodon laticaudus , which was described in 1838. Recently, molecular biological analysis showed however that there are three Scoliodon TYPES must act. Since the holotype of Scoliodon macrorhynchos has been lost, the species was re-described in 2008 by White, Last & Najlor.
Appearance and characteristics
Scoliodon macrorhynchos is a slender shark with a maximum body length of 71 cm . It has a long, extremely flattened muzzle and a slender body and tail. The first dorsal fin is relatively small and triangular. It begins behind the tips of the pectoral fin. The second dorsal fin begins well behind the beginning of the anal fin. The pelvic fins are small. The color of the shark is greenish to bronze without pattern, the top is slate gray, the underside is whitish. A sexual dimorphism shows in the dentition of the lower jaw; the teeth of the males are significantly longer. Compared to Scoliodon laticaudus , the head is shorter, the anal fin a little longer and the clasps of the males a little shorter.
distribution
The species occurs in the western Pacific from China and Japan to western Indonesia , while Scoliodon laticaudus is at home in the Indian Ocean on the coasts of Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka. It remains to be clarified whether a third population of fine-nosed sharks in the Bay of Bengal and on the west coast of Thailand is a previously undescribed species or the Scoliodon muelleri , which was described in 1839 and later synonymous with S. laticaudus .
Scoliodon macrorhynchos is a shallow water inhabitant of the continental shelf , which also occurs in brackish water.
