Idaea mancipiata

Idaea mancipiata is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe Spanner family (Geometridae). A distinction is made betweenthe two subspecies Idaea manciapiata manciapiata and Idaea manciapiata repagulata .

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 15 to 20 millimeters in the first generation of a year, and 14 to 16 millimeters in the second generation. In the case of the wide wings , the hem of the rear wing pair is rounded. The basic color of the nominate form is pale sand-colored and has a brownish coating, which is more pronounced in the populations in central Spain in particular . The subspecies I. m. repagulata has a brilliant white basic wing color that only shimmers slightly sand-colored. The transverse lines of the wing markings are very fine and slightly convex . In the nominate form they are brown, in the other subspecies they are gray. The basic color is clearly evident in the distal area. The black discal spots are always clearly pronounced and sharply delineated.

The forehead ( frons ) is dark brown and the adjoining vertex is white or sand-colored. The transition area between the head ( occiput ) and the chest ( thorax ) is usually a little darker. The antennae of the males are covered with very long cilia .

The rails ( tibia ) of the rear pair of legs are slender and curved in the males. They also have a whitish tuft that does not cover the shortened tarsi .

Geographical distribution and habitat

Idaea mancipiata is common in Europe and Western Asia , but the distribution areas are not related. While the nominate form is common and very rare in southern France and Spain, the subspecies I. m. repagulata spread from the Crimea to the Urals , and from northern Iran to the Caucasus . The distribution areas usually extend along the respective coasts or oases in Northern Iran. The height profile of the nominate form generally ranges from m to 300  m and only in exceptional cases up to 1500  m . With the subspecies occurring to the east, however, heights of up to 1500  m are common.

Phenology and way of life

Idaea mancipiata is bivoltine , which means that two generations are formed per year. The first generation moths fly from the beginning of mid-May to the end of June. The second generation flies from the beginning of August to the end of October. The times shift at higher altitudes and it has not been conclusively clarified whether the species is univolted here.

Systematics

The species was first described as valid nomenclature by Otto Staudinger in 1871 as Acidalia mancipiata .
