history

Scorched Earth , the model for Scorched 3D , was designed by Wendell Hicken for MS-DOS in 1991 and quickly developed into a popular classic. In 2001, Scorched 3D's lead developer, Gavin Camp, decided to breathe new life into the concept by using 3D graphics. According to its own information in an interview, Scorched Earth was very popular with Camp's circle of friends at the time, which led to many played nights. Finally, on the occasion of an 8-hour flight that he spent playing Scorched Earth with a friend , he figured that countless more games would have to be developed based on the game idea, which went well with his love of 3D graphics. In April 2001 the first build was ready. In its original version 1.0, Scorched 3D was just a landscape generator, but it quickly developed into a fully comprehensive game. Since then, Scorched 3D has been continuously developed and has now reached version 43. On the official download sites SourceForge.net and Download.com , Scorched 3D has recorded a combined total of around two million downloads (as of September 2007). In 2007 Scorched 3D was named SourceForge Project of the Month for May. In addition to the official version, there are several modifications of the game created by the community .

Gameplay

At the beginning of a round, the player's figure (in the original version a tank , but in Scorched 3D also any other vehicles, flying objects or other figures with the characteristics of a tank), as well as the figures of the competitors, are placed in a randomly selected position placed on an island . From now on it is important to correctly adjust the direction of fire, the angle of fire and the range of fire to hit and eliminate the opponents' figures before your own figure is destroyed. Factors such as wind direction, wind strength and your own location must be taken into account, as well as choosing the right weapon from harmless clods of earth to nuclear cluster bomb ( Death's Head ) and using it strategically. If all pieces except one are switched off or the specified number of moves have been used up, the round is over and the remaining player (s) is / are declared the winner of the round. Depending on their performance, the players receive virtual money after each round as a reward for hits, kills or winning the round, which can be spent on new weapons or protective devices such as protective shields. Saved assets bring interest from round to round , which can make it worthwhile to plan for the long term in order to be able to buy better weapons or protective devices later. After a specified number of laps (usually ten in online mode), the final ranking is created. Criteria here are the rounds won, kills , hits and the remaining assets (in this order). When playing online on the official servers, the successes achieved are also transferred to a server , which means that statistics and rankings of all participating players can be called up on the official site. There are also various other game modes such as playing in teams, which can also be played with real players and / or bots .
