Scotch Corner is a major highway hub in northern England .

Traffic significance

At Scotch Corner, seen from the south, the A66 branches off from the A1 . Since the A1 is the most important road connection from the south to Edinburgh , while the A66 leads to Penrith , where the M6 is the most important artery in the north-west, the traffic flows from England to West and East Scotland separate here. This is why the knot also has its name, which means "Scottish corner" in German.

Scotch Corner is listed as a destination even on the M6 dozens of miles away . Metaphorically, it is also called "the new gateway to Cumbria , the North East and Scotland" means ( "the modern gateway to Cumbria, the North East and Scotland" ).

In addition to the A1 and A66, the A6108 to Richmond and a regional road to the neighboring village of Middleton Tyas also arrive at Scotch Corner .

expansion

The A1 , here expanded as the A1 (M) motorway with two lanes in each direction since March 2018 , passes the junction without any intersections. All other roads are connected via a large traffic light-regulated roundabout , which is built on two bridges over the A1.

To the northeast of the roundabout there is a gas station and rest area, to the southwest there is a hotel, a campsite and a car repair shop. A settlement has not developed around Scotch Corner in modern times.

history

During the upgrading of the A1 to motorway status (2015 to 2018), a number of relics from Roman times were found as well as indications that there was an important settlement at Scotch Corner at that time.
