Scotoecus is a genus of bats in the smooth-nosed family(Vespertilionidae). The species occur in Africa south of the Sahara and South Asia before.
The following species belong to the genus.
- Scotoecus albofuscus , in west and east Africa.
- Scotoecus hirundo , south of the Sahel zone and in East Africa.
- Scotoecus pallidus , in Pakistan and India .
These bats reach a head-torso length of 46 to 68 mm, a tail length of 28 to 40 mm and a forearm length of 28 to 38 mm. The weight is 4 to 5 g. The color of the silky fur varies between brownish, reddish and dark gray. In scotoecus hirundo are wing membranes dark and the body bright, whereas in scotoecus albofuscus just the opposite is. Scotoecus pallidus is characterized by a light brown underside. The representatives of the genus are similar to the American noctule bat ( Nycticeius ) in external appearance, but they have a wider snout and smooth surfaces on the front of the canine teeth.
The African species live in open landscapes with several trees. Scotoecus pallidus lives in semi-deserts and rests under house roofs, in farm buildings or in tombs. In this species, both sexes form mixed colonies in spring , which separate in summer before the young are born. Probably the reproduction of the African species is also linked to the warmer seasons.
