The Scripps Heights include a number icy mountain peaks on the Wilkins Coast of Palmer Lands on the Antarctic Peninsula . They tower over the peninsula between the Casey and Lurabee glaciers, which ends in Cape Walcott .

They were discovered by the Australian polar explorer Hubert Wilkins during an overflight on December 20, 1928. Wilkins mistakenly believed them to be a large island in the middle of two supposed canals that cut through the Antarctic Peninsula in an east-west direction on both sides . The US geographer WLG Joerg was able to identify the actual nature of this geographic object by comparing aerial photographs by the US polar explorer Lincoln Ellsworth from 1935 with the reports of the British Graham Land Expedition (1934–1937). In addition, this was confirmed in 1940 by explorations by the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939-1941). Namesake is William Edmund Scripps (1882–1952), pilot and editor of the Detroit News newspaper .
