Seafield Tower is the ruin of a Niederungsburg ( Tower House ) on the North Sea coast of the Scottish county of Fife . The tower, built in the 16th century from local red sandstone , is located between the villages of Kinghorn and Kirkcaldy . The Fife Coastal Path runs past it .

history

The lands of Seafield and Markinch were given to Robert Multrare by King James II in 1493. The lands and Tower House remained in the hands of the Multrare (or Moultrie ) family until 1631 . Then they were sold to then Archbishop of Glasgow , James Law . With Law's death in 1632, ownership of the tower was lost and it fell into the hands of the Methven family . The last owner was Methven of Raith , who gave it up in 1733.

The tower is said to have been five stories high, 2.5 meters thick walls and an interior area of 6.09 meters × 4.27 meters.

Between 1973 and 2015, Historic Scotland listed the remains of the tower as a Category B Historic Structure. In 2015, the tower was removed from this list as it had been integrated into a larger area around the tower since 2003, which had been a Scheduled Monument since 1937 .
