The uninhabited Seaforth Island ( Gaelic : Eilean Shìophort ) is a Scottish island in the Outer Hebrides .

geography

The island is located in the inlet Loch Seaforth , which marks the border between Lewis and Harris , the components of the double island Lewis and Harris , in this section . After a distance of 12.5 km in a north-westerly direction, Loch Seaforth turns abruptly to the northeast. At this kink is Seaforth Island, which is the largest island in the estuary with an area of 273  hectares . Its highest point is marked by a nameless hill in the northern part. It rises 217 m in height.

Due to its location on the border between Lewis and Harris, which also historically formed the border between the traditional counties of Ross-shire and Inverness-shire , the affiliation of Seaforth Island was controversial. After the border initially divided the island, Seaforth Island was completely added to both counties in an unusual decision in 1851. Only the administrative reform in 1975 resolved this contradiction with the creation of the administrative region Western Isles , which completely covers the Outer Hebrides.
