Seagate Castle is a ruined castle in the Scottish town of Irvine in the North Ayrshire council area . The facility is also classified as a Scheduled Monument . A former inclusion in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A has meanwhile been revoked.

history

In 1184 the castle "Irewin" is mentioned, an important fortress around which today's city of Irvine developed. The Treaty of Irvine is said to have been signed there in 1297 . Today's Seagate Castle may occupy the same location and include fragments of the older fortress. Seagate Castle was built between 1562 and 1585 for Hugh Montgomerie, 3rd Earl of Eglinton . His descendants lived in the fortress until the 1740s. Allegedly, Alexander Montgomerie, 10th Earl of Eglinton , ordered the roof to be removed so that the beams could be used for a church in Ardrossan .

description

Although Seagate Castle is in the center of Irvine, it is not a nobleman’s town palace, but a castle. The masonry consists of rubble from sandstone , which is red in the front and gray in the rear. The latter area may be fragments of the older fortress. The approximately 30 m long structure is entered through a central arched portal with supposedly Norman garb , which has been completely preserved to this day. To the left of the gate there is a metal plaque indicating the signing of the Treaty of Irvine and a visit by Queen Mary of Scots . The irregular upper floor with several window openings and loopholes is partially preserved up to the height of the stair tower. This was provided with armored watch towers . The gables were partly built as a stepped gable .
