The Irvine is a river in Scotland . It rises at a height of 247 m about ten kilometers west-southwest of Strathaven north of Loudon Hill . The Irvine initially flows for around 1.5 km in a south-westerly direction, forming the border between the regions of East Ayrshire and South Lanarkshire before turning west. The main direction of flow to the west gave the Irvine its name, as the name is derived from Gaelic "Iar-an", which means "westward". After 48 km, the Irvine at ends Irvine in Irvine Bay , a side bay on the south shore of the Firth of Clyde .
The Irvine flows through the cities of Darvel and Galston before finally reaching Kilmarnock , where it receives one of its largest tributaries, Kilmarnock Water . West of Kilmarnock, the Irvine first forms the border river between East Ayrshire and South Ayrshire and then for a short distance between South Ayrshire and North Ayrshire . On its final miles in North Ayrshire, the river in Irvine takes on Annick Water and Garnock before flowing into Irvine Bay. The A71 follows the Irvine for a large part of the run and crosses it several times.
