Sean Costello (born April 16, 1979 in Philadelphia ; † April 15, 2008 in Atlanta , Georgia) was an American blues and soul singer who was best known for his idiosyncratic blues-based guitar playing and expressive soul voice. He released five albums before his sudden death ended his career.

life and career

Born in Philadelphia , he moved to Atlanta with his family when he was 9 years old . At the age of 14 he won a talent competition from the Beale Street Blues Society and soon after formed his first band.

At the age of 16 he recorded his first CD 'Call The Cops'. His guitar playing on Susan Tedeschi 's gold album Just Won't Burn (1998) then earned him a bigger reputation. His band then toured the United States as a backing band for Susan Tedeschi. Costello's second album, Cuttin 'In , got him even more attention. He then led an extensive tour life with around 300 gigs per year through the USA and Europe.

Due to the influence of the former The Band member Levon Helm , the blues musician opened up to other styles and took on soul influences in particular. This was expressed in his album Sean Costello , released in 2005 . His 2008 album We Can Get Together is widely regarded as his best; it has been nominated twice for the Blues Music Award .

death

Sean Costello was found dead in his Atlanta hotel room on April 15, 2008. It turned out that he died from an accidental overdose of his medication. After his death, his family announced that Sean had bipolar disorder , for which he was taking the medication. After his death, his family set up a foundation to study the disease, the Sean Costello Memorial Fund for Bipolar Research .
