Sebastian Hensel (mathematician)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sebastian Wolfgang Hensel (born March 14, 1986 ) is a German mathematician and university professor .

Career

Hensel first completed his Abitur in 2005 and a diploma course in mathematics in 2008. This was followed by a doctorate magna cum laude with Ursula Hamenstädt in Bonn 2011 (dissertation Metric distortions of subgroups of mapping class groups ). He was then a Dickson Instructor at the University of Chicago and from 2015 academic advisor (temporary) in Bonn. Hensel completed his habilitation in 2017.

In the 2018 summer semester, Hensel moved from Bonn to the LMU Munich , where he is a professor.

Research area

Hensel describes his work as follows:

“My research deals with low-dimensional topology , geometric group theory , and their connections. I mainly study algebraic and geometric properties of mapping class groups (of surfaces or handle bodies) and the spaces on which they act. [In addition to this] I am also particularly interested in the effect of these groups on the homology of finite overlays . "
