Ursula Hamenstädt (born January 15, 1961 in Kassel ) is a German mathematician who deals with differential geometry.

Ursula Hamenstädt, Berkeley 1986

Hamenstädt studied mathematics at the Clausthal University of Technology , the University of Zurich , the University of Pierre and Marie Curie in Paris and the University of Bonn , where she did her doctorate in 1986 under Wilhelm Klingenberg ( on the theory of Carnot-Carathéodory metrics and their applications ). She was a fellow of studienstiftung .

As a post-doctoral student, Hamenstädt was a Miller Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley from 1986 to 1988 , and an Assistant Professor at Caltech from 1988 to 1990 , where she received a research grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation ( Sloan Research Fellowship ) in 1990 . She has been a professor at the University of Bonn since 1990, with a C4 professorship since 1992.

Among other things, she deals with pond miller rooms and dynamics on pond miller rooms, with the geometry of mapping class groups, with geometric group theory and with low-dimensional topology.

She was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Hyderabad (India) 2010 ( Actions of the mapping class group , Proc. ICM, Volume 2, p. 1002) and at the first European Congress of Mathematicians in Paris in 1992 ( Harmonic measures for leafwise elliptic operators along foliations ). In 2012 she received an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council. Also in 2012 she was elected to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . She is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
