Sebastian Spörlin

Sebastian Spörlin (born September 3, 1560 in Basel ; † May 21, 1644 ibid) was a Swiss politician , envoy and mayor of Basel.

Spörlin was the son of the bailiff and councilor of Münchenstein Georg and Dorothea, née Krug. He was the nephew of Sebastian Doppenstein and Caspar Krug. Spörlin worked as a cooper and copper dealer and, as one of the richest citizens of Basel, held various political offices. Between 1604 and 1623 he undertook over 30 embassies for his hometown and was mayor of Basel from 1621 to 1644.

Spörlin was married three times. Together with his third wife Maria Magdalena Hagenbach, he also emerged as a benefactor.
