Sebastiano Guzzone (born September 13, 1856 in Militello in Val di Catania , † February 11, 1890 in Florence ) was an Italian painter from Sicily .

Life

Guzone's talent as a portraitist was already noticed in Militello, such as the portrait of Antonino Morana , Bishop of Caltagirone from 1872 until his death in 1879 , which is now in the Chiesa San Nicolo of Militello. At a young age Guzzone went to Rome , where he received his first drawing lessons from the copyist Filippo Casabene. He then attended the Accademia di San Luca , where he dealt with the art of the Renaissance and, in addition to several awards, received several important scholarships.

This was followed by stays in Paris and London (1878), where his portrait art was very well received.

His pictures have been shown in exhibitions in Rome (1881–1882) and Venice (1887), including a cycle of paintings about Francesco Petrarca , the painting " Cosimo de 'Medici surprises his daughter at an amorous celebration" and " Hamlet and Ophelia " .

Guzzone died while studying in Florence.
