Secret Hitler is a board , card and deduction game by the US game developers Thomas Maranges, Max Temkin, Mike Boxleiter and Mackenzie Schubert. The game was self-published by the authors in 2016 and is available under the Creative Commons license BY-NC-SA 4.0.

development

The developers Thomas Maranges, Max Temkin (known for the card game Cards Against Humanity ), Mike Boxleiter and Mackenzie Schubert got the inspiration for the game from other deduction games like Cluedo or Who am I? . They analyzed what they liked about it and what not and how it could be improved. The team later considered addressing the time before the Second World War , since according to the developers there was a lot of betrayal and opportunism during the events before Hitler's seizure of power in the Weimar Republic , which could be easily integrated into the game principle. In December 2015, the developers started crowdfunding on kickstarter.com . The minimum limit for the further development of the game you put 54,450 dollars . As of the end, donations totaling $ 1,479,046 had been received. The first copies of the game were sent to donors in August 2016. In the run-up to the actual publication, a print-and-play version was made available free of charge. The entire game was released in the fall of 2016.

Gameplay

At the start of the game, each player is randomly assigned the role of a liberal or a fascist , but one player receives a Secret Hitler card. The fascists try to sow distrust and bring their leader to power. The liberals must find the secret Hitler and stop his seizure of power. At the beginning of the game, all liberal players close their eyes and the fascists reveal each other by opening their eyes. The secret Hitler keeps his eyes closed but raises his thumb so that the fascists can see who their leader is. So the fascists know each other and know who Hitler is. Hitler and the Liberals do not know what role the other players have. In each round, the players choose a President and a Chancellor , who together must enact one of three randomly chosen laws. When the government passes a fascist law, players will have to find out if they were betrayed or had bad luck drawing the law card. In the game there are also certain possibilities for the government to give the fascists an advantage. They try to create chaos through these possibilities, whereas the opponents have to ensure that Germany does not start a war. The goal of the liberals is to either pass five liberal laws or find out who the secret Hitler is and kill him. The fascists' goal, however, is either to pass six fascist laws or to make Hitler chancellor after three fascist laws have been passed.
