The Sectio chirurgica is a project of the Anatomical Institute of the University of Tübingen , which has been taking place since the winter semester 2008/09. Various clinical pictures are simulated and surgically treated in realistic live operations on body donors . The special feature is that all operating theaters are streamed live on the Internet so that medical students or medical professionals can follow the interventions worldwide.

concept

Experts from the respective medical disciplines demonstrate characteristic surgical techniques on body donors. Here they are in dialogue with radiologists and anatomists who comment on the operation from a television studio and provide anatomical and radiological background information. Reason for the existence of cesarean section chirurgica that the Medical Licensing Regulations prescribes that already in the preclinical should be taught clinical content. What is special about the concept of the Sectio chirurgica is that the episodes can be watched live on the Internet. Furthermore, spectators have the opportunity to ask questions live in the operating room. There is also a limited number of seats directly in the operating room.

In addition to a fully equipped, but not sterile, operating room, there is a green-screen studio as well as a control room and space for live viewers. The project is supervised on the one hand by the staff of the anatomical institute and on the other hand by students of human medicine. The head and moderator of the Sectio chirurgica is Bernhard Hirt, the head of clinical anatomy. The episodes will be streamed live on the Sectio chirurgica website. However, access to the live stream is only possible for people from the medical field. There is also the possibility for other universities to register their own lecture halls for the live stream. In addition to the original German sound, all episodes are also offered live with English translations. In the summer semester 2019, some episodes will be designed in cooperation with Fudan University Shanghai . Therefore, these episodes will be produced in English and translated live into Chinese.

In 2009, the event was awarded the teaching prize of the Medical Faculty of the University of Tübingen. In 2015 the project received the award “Excellent Places in the Land of Ideas” . In addition, Bernhard Hirt received the Anton Waldeyer Prize of the Anatomical Society in 2018 for the concept of the Sectio chirurgica.

Further episodes are planned for 2020, some of them again in cooperation with Fudan University Shanghai.
