Sed was an ancient Egyptian deity in the form of a jackal. It is unclear whether Sed was an independent god or related to the jackal god Upuaut .
The earliest evidence of Sed can be found on the Palermostein , a fragment of the Annal Stone from the 5th Dynasty ( Old Kingdom ), where it is mentioned in inscriptions. The god was the theophoric part of personal names until the Middle Kingdom , before this was replaced by Upuaut. Sed was closely related to royalty, and the name of the Sedfest , the king's jubilee festival , probably goes back to this god. He was also associated with Maat , the concept of justice, world order and truth.
