Sedad Hakkı Eldem

Sedad Hakkı Eldem (born August 18, 1908 in Istanbul ; † September 7, 1988 there ) was a Turkish architect and architectural theorist. He is considered one of the leading architects in Turkey of the 20th century.

Life

Eldem comes from a respected Ottoman family; his father was a diplomat. In his youth he lived in several European countries a. a. he attended the Ecole Cuchet in Geneva and the Alte Realgymnasium in Munich.

In 1924 he began to study architecture at the Istanbul Art Academy. In 1928 he was on a scholarship in Berlin and Paris , where he met the architects Hans Poelzig , Auguste Perret and Le Corbusier . In 1931 he became a professor at the art academy and freelance architect. From 1941 to 1949 he was dean of the Faculty of Architecture. In addition, he was chairman of several government organizations for architecture and monument protection. With influences from Europe and the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright , he modernized Turkish architecture and designed numerous important buildings in Istanbul.

In 2008 the Ottoman Bank Museum dedicated an archive to him.
