Sedef Çakmak

Sedef Çakmak (born June 9, 1982 ) is a Turkish politician and LGBT activist. She was the first openly homosexual to be elected to political office in Turkey.

Life

Çakmak grew up in Ankara . She studied sociology at Galatasaray University in Istanbul and graduated with a bachelor's degree.

She has been active in the Turkish LGBT movement since the 2000s. In 2004 she got in touch with the LGBT organization Lambda Istanbul as part of a term paper for the university . Through contact with other LGBT people, she became more aware of her own lesbian identity. She then became active in Lambda Istanbul and was an important member in the areas of international relations and research within the organization. In 2011 she co-founded the organization SPoD LGBTI and was its chairman until 2013.

In the Istanbul municipal elections in 2014, she ran for the CHP in the Beşiktaş district and made her lesbian sexual orientation public. She received a mandate that she took up on March 2, 2015. She had previously worked for the district head as a consultant on LGBT issues.

In October 2017 she was elected chairwoman of Rainbow Rose , a network of LGBT platforms within the Party of European Socialists .
