Sedulius

Caelius (also Coelius ; both name forms uncertain) Sedulius († around 450) was a Latin-Christian poet of the 5th century.

Life

Sedulius came from southern Gaul or Italy. He first studied philosophy before he was ordained a priest .

Sedulius wrote numerous sacred poems and hymns , some of which were included in the church liturgy . Thus the stanzas 1–7 of his twenty-three stanzas Abecedarius A solis ortus cardine became the Christmas hymn , the stanzas 8, 9, 11 and 13 (Hostis Herodes impie) became the hymn on the feast of the apparition of the Lord . Martin Luther , who was therefore familiar with the two texts and who valued them theologically, translated them into German for the congregation chant ( Christ, we should praise and what do you fear, enemy Herod, very much ).

The main work of Sedulius is the Paschale Carmen , which in five books retells the Gospels from the birth of Christ to the Ascension in hexameters .
