Sea battle near Naxos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Battle of Naxos was a naval battle between the Athenians and the Spartans in 376 BC. BC, which was fought off the Aegean island of Naxos .

In 377 BC In the 3rd century BC, Athens founded the Second Attic Sea Confederation, whereby the Athenians were anxious to dispel worries of the allies - Athens would dominate the league and endanger their autonomy - with appropriate guarantees. However, Sparta saw its own hegemonic policy endangered in the League policy and tried to prevent cities from joining the League.

In 376 BC A spartan fleet of 60 ships blocked the Saronic Gulf and interrupted Athens' grain transports. The Athenians set up a fleet of 80 triremes under the command of Chabrias and attacked the Spartan ships. Before Naxos there was a decisive battle in which the Athenians were victorious.

This success secured Athens again the maritime supremacy in the Aegean Sea and brought about the accession of the Cyclades and several other islands to the Athenian alliance.
