The Gasthaus Seewirt (also: Seewirt am Thumsee ) on Thumsee in the Upper Bavarian town of Bad Reichenhall is a villa from the late 19th century.

The building is a listed building and is registered under the number D-1-72-114-221 in the Bavarian Monument List.

history

The building was erected in 1873 as Villa Pachmayr . The Pachmayr family were also owners of the Thumsee until the 1980s.

In 1901, Sigmund Freud and his family spent the summer at Villa Pachmayr. Freud rented a room in the villa and - as one of the very first guests at Lake Thumsee - looked for peace and quiet at some distance from the well-known health and tourist resort of Bad Reichenhall.

In his autobiography, published in the United States in 1957, Sigmund Freud's son Martin recalled an incident during the last days of his stay at Lake Thumsee. He and his brother Oliver were insulted by passers-by as "Israelites" and accused them of stealing fish from the lake. Shortly afterwards, they and their father were insulted with anti-Semitic swear words.

“This ugly event made a deep impression on me. The impression was so strong that even after fifty-five years I can still clearly remember the expressions of racist hatred on the faces of these highwaymen. Time has undoubtedly clouded its contours, but not blurred, they remain inhuman and desolate. "

- Martin Freud : autobiography (Martin Freud: Mein Vater Sigmund Freud , Heidelberg 1999, p. 76f

Such an occurrence - 40 years before the Holocaust - was not uncommon in Fin de Siècle Europe . However, this was an exception in the health resort and holiday resort Bad Reichenhall, which is heavily frequented by international guests, because until then there had hardly been any racially or religiously motivated defamation or exclusion. The social criteria were more relevant here, so anyone who could afford a stay was welcome. Less well-heeled guests were denied access to the world of the rich and beautiful anyway.

The Seewirt was not open continuously between 1980 and 2010. After the Thumsee and Seewirt were sold, it was renovated by the new owner. The building was partly gutted, the sanitary and electrical systems were modernized and the terrace was renewed. During the construction work in 2011 a fire broke out in the roof structure, but it was only locally limited and the building survived with minor damage. In 2013 the restaurant was able to reopen after several years of renovation.

Building description

It is a two-storey cross - gable building with protruding flat gable roofs over ornamental beams and ornamental framework. There is a wraparound loggia on the ground floor.
