Font example for Segoe UI

The Segoe UI is a font family developed by Microsoft for the Windows Vista , Windows 7 and Windows 10 operating systems , which replaces the Microsoft font Tahoma as the sans serif standard font. According to Microsoft employees, it was based on the Segoe font, named after a street in Madison (Wisconsin) , from the company Monotype , which was supplemented with missing characters and processed with OpenType and ClearType for better screen display, easier scannability and software-based recording . Segoe is also Microsoft's house font. Microsoft gives the English pronunciation of "SEE-go", ie [ ˈsiːgoʊ ]. According to Microsoft, a text set in this font can be read better than with Tahoma , Microsoft Sans Serif or Arial .

Allegations of plagiarism

The most obvious differences between Segoe UI, Frutiger and Segoe

The Linotype company and typography experts accused Microsoft of having copied the Linotype font Frutiger Next exactly without a license, apart from small differences in "1" and "j", round instead of rectangular dots and a slight change in weight (line thickness) - similar ones There have already been allegations about the predecessor font Arial , which is suspected of being an imitation of Helvetica . Against Microsoft's registration of the font in the Office of Harmonization for the Internal Market as a Community registered design successfully raised Linotype opposition. The office declared the protection of the Segoe UI null and void and described the design as “identical” to the Frutiger or Frutiger Next in the reasons for the decision after comparing the printed image.

The same text in Segoe UI and Leelawadee

Microsoft Windows is supplied with different fonts for non-Latin writing systems, which also contain the Latin glyphs of the Segoe UI. An example is the Leelawadee for the Thai script . However, individual glyphs deviate from the Segoe UI (for example, in Leelawadee the uppercase letters "I" and "M" and the lowercase letters "i" and "l"), possibly by a more pleasing appearance of bits of text in Latin script for the actual target group of the respective font to reach.

Extensions

To cover larger areas of Unicode , Microsoft is providing the Segoe UI Emoji, Segoe UI Historic and Segoe UI Symbol fonts with Windows 10 .

Segoe UI has also been available since Windows 10 in the line widths light, semilight, normal (standard), semibold, bold and black (upright and italic). For the above, there is only one font style, not even italic ones.
