List of domestic dogs

The Segugio Italiano a pelo raso ( it . For short-haired Italian Hound ) is one of the FCI recognized Italian breed ( Group 6, Section 1.2, no. 337 ). It is closely related to the Segugio Italiano a pelo forte (FCI 198).

Origin and history

The Segugio Italiano a pelo raso is ascribed a history that goes back to ancient times. The breed is believed to be the descendant of hunting dogs used to pursue game in ancient Egypt, and later brought to the Mediterranean region and Italy by Phoenician merchants. Dogs that are very similar to the Segugio are shown in drawings from different pharaonic dynasties. In particular, the lop ears of the dogs shown are seen as signs of advanced domestication .

description

The body of these hounds is square, about as high as it is long. Males are 52 to 58 cm high, bitches 48 to 56 cm. In the case of excellent dogs, the breed standard allows a deviation of ± 2 cm. The physique should be strong, the muscles should be well developed, and the skin should be tight (which in cynology is called dry ). Seen from above, the head is oval, the lop ears have a triangular shape and are very broad. Neck and withers are harmoniously fused, the withers protrude a little from the straight back line, which slopes down harmoniously from there and is slightly rounded in the lumbar region. The rod is thin and its shape is reminiscent of a grissino . The hair is thick, short, tight and harsh. The standard allows a color for a monochromatic fawn from light washed out to deep red and black and tan coat. Brown is not allowed. The Segugio Italiano a pelo raso should weigh 18 to 28 kg. His almond-shaped eyes should be dark-ocher-colored and always have black eyelids.

Essence

The Segugio Italiano a pelo raso has a courageous nature, but a little intrusive nature. Compared to the Segugio Italiano a pelo forte, the breed is more exuberant and lively. The Segugio Italiano a pelo raso is a hound that is very resilient and works quickly and eagerly - whether alone or in a pack .

Statue of Diana in the Vatican Museum

Dogs of the same type and size as today's Segugio can be found as part of the statues next to the hunting Diana in the Museum of Naples and next to the archer Diana in the Museum of the Vatican. In the castle of Borso d'Este there is a painting that represents the ideal type of today's Segugio.
