A soap dispenser is a container that contains either liquid or finely ground dry soap and dispenses under pressure with the help of a pump, rotary or other mechanism. Many soap dispensers work on the principle of a piston pump .

private area

The development in packaging technology has led to the fact that today many liquid soap products are offered in packaging in which the function of the soap dispenser (dosing device) is already integrated. Soap dispensers can no longer only be found in public spaces, but also in the private sector in the form of small, free-standing containers with a capacity of up to 500 ml . The disadvantage here is that the thicker-walled containers increase the consumption of packaging material - in contrast to liquid soap packed in bags . There are also more expensive and better processed luxury versions that are designed for a longer product life.

Public area

Soap dispensers are often fixed to the wall in public toilets and washrooms. There are also dispensers there that are able to foam up the active washing substances . Newer surfactants make it possible to reduce the amount of washing-active substance required to a minimum without restricting the quality and result of the washing process.

Refillable devices for dispensing liquid soap have been in use in restaurants, medical practices and hospitals since the beginning of the 20th century.

According to the restaurant regulations of the individual federal states in Germany, soap must be provided in the soap dispenser in every toilet, which may not be dispensed for a fee. One advantage of using soap dispensers that are fixed to the wall is the relatively high level of security against theft. In contrast, in the case of vandalism, the damage is all the greater.

For use in healthcare facilities with patient contact , the Commission for Hospital Hygiene and Infection Prevention (KRINKO) calls for wall-mounted soap dispensers that can be used without hand contact.
