The Seikei University ( Jap. 成蹊大学 , Seikei daigaku ) is a private university in Japan . It is located in Musashino in Tokyo Prefecture .

The name Seikei comes from a Chinese sentence by Sima Qian's Shiji : " 桃李 不 言 下 自成 蹊 ." (German for example: The peach tree or plum tree doesn't say a word; however, the path to it (around flowers and fruits) is made naturally .) The peach tree or plum tree there denotes the virtuous person.

history

The school was founded in 1906 by Nakamura Haruji ( 中 村 春 二 , 1877-1924) as a private school Seikei-en ( 成 蹊 園 , Eng. "Seikei Garden"). Their aim was to educate boys with respect for personality and freedom. It was developed by Nakamura's former school friends Iwasaki Koyata ( 岩崎小弥太 ), the future leader of the Mitsubishi - Zaibatsus , and Imamura Shigezō ( 今村繁三 ), a banker, supported economically. In 1912 it developed into the Seikei Business School ( 成 蹊 実 務 学校 , Seikei jitsumu gakkō ), which was located in Ikebukuro . The school moved to today's campus in 1924.

The school body founded the Seikei High School in 1925 ( 成 蹊 高等学校 , Seikei kōtō gakkō ), a 7-year school (ages 12-19). After the Pacific War , it became Seikei Middle School (1947; 3 year school), Seikei High School (1948; 3 year) and Seikei University (1949; 4 year).
