Side altar (Marienkirche Rieden)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The late Gothic side altar (also Holy Cross and Holy Helper altar ) of the Marienkirche in Rieden (today the municipality of Rosengarten ) was created around 1520 in the style of the Halle-Franconian art tradition, while the flat wing reliefs are reminiscent of works from Ulm.

The predella is stylistically related to an altar predella in the Wolfgang Church in Tullau . Since this predella was made after its inscription in 1520, the same date is assumed for the side altar of the church in Rieden.

description

Carved figures

In the altar shrine there are carved figures of Christ crowned with a wreath of thorns holding a cross. It is flanked on the left by St. Sebastian . On the other side is the figure of St. Leonhard . On the right wing inside is a bas-relief the Holy. Dorothea shown. On the left inside of the wing, St. Margaret is presumably depicted as a half-relief . A geometrically shaped tracery is built above the altar shrine, in which there are three figures of saints, such as Christophorus with child, flanked by Laurentius . On the right is the figure of Pope Sixtus II.

Altar exterior view

When the altar wings are closed, four picture panels can be seen on the outside of the altar wing and the inactive wings on the right and left. On the outside of the left wing of the altar, Christ can be seen as the Man of Sorrows, while on the outside of the right wing of the altar, Mary is depicted as " Mater Dolorosa " ("Our Lady of Sorrows "). On the left inactive wing, St. Leonhard is depicted as a Benedictine monk with a tonsure and chain. St. Sebastian is shown on the right passive wing. The two inactive wings were probably separated from the altar in 1877. It was not until the renovation in 1981/82 that the inactive leaves were attached to the altar again.

Predella

The predella painting shows the fourteen helpers in need sitting behind a long table. In the middle between the emergency helpers is the crowned Mary , who hands the baby Jesus an apple. To the left is Catherine of Alexandria with her sword and crown. The child puts the engagement ring on Katharina's finger. The helpers in need from left to right are: Cyriakus , Erasmus , Pantaleon , Barbara , Blasius , Margareta , Achatius , Vitus , Aegidius , Eustachius , Christophorus , Georg .
