General view of the Arca di San Domenico.

The Arca di San Domenico is a tomb that houses the remains of St. Dominic are located. The sculpture is now in the chapel of St. Domenic's Basilica in Bologna . Dominic's body lies in a cypress wood coffin, his head is kept separately on the back of the tomb, in the reliquary of the goldsmith Jacopo Roseto da Bologna (1383).

The work on the tomb spanned almost 500 years. When Dominic died in 1221, he was first buried behind the altar of the monastery church of San Nicolò delle Vigne. In 1228, the expansion of today's basilica began, and Dominikus' remains were transferred into a simple marble coffin, which initially stood on the floor in the right aisle. There it was hardly visible to the numerous pilgrims, so that the Dominicans commissioned a new shrine in 1264 . Niccolò Pisano was responsible for the design, the execution was done in his workshop, mainly by his assistants Lapo di Ricevuto and Arnolfo di Cambio . At every corner there is a sculpture of one of the doctors of the church . Originally, caryatids carried the coffin; After the tomb was redesigned, these figures are now in various museums such as the Bargello and the Louvre .

The tomb was moved to the center of the church in 1411. Between 1469 and 1473 the previously flat coffin was crowned; The sculptors included Niccolò dell'Arca , who was named after this work, and the young Michelangelo . The statuettes of Petronius and St. Proculus of Puteoli were made by Michelangelo - an anticipation of his David . A candelabra rises above the kymation , held by two putti and four dolphins , on which the statue of the Eternal Father rises .

Alfonso Lombardi added a step in 1532; it shows scenes from the life of St. Dominic.

From 1597 Floriano Ambrosini replaced the Gothic chapel from 1413 with a new building.

From 1613 to 1615 Guido Reni painted the ceiling fresco over the Arco.

The last addition to the tomb was the altar, designed by Mauro Tesi (1730–1766) and executed in 1768 by Alessandro Salviolini.

Paintings by Alessandro Tiarini and Leonello Spada hang in the chapel to the right and left of the Arca .
