Selenicereus macdonaldiae is a species of plant in the genus Selenicereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Selenicereus macdonaldiae grows stretched out or climbing and becomes up to 8 meters long. Aerial roots arise from the shiny green, often with a purple tinge, shoots 1 to 1.5 centimeters in diameter . On their 5 to 7 ribs there are 2 to 3 millimeters high, protruding and flattened bumps. The areoles are brown, the few thorns up to 2 millimeters long.

The flowers are 30 to 36 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 22 to 26 centimeters. Their outer narrow bracts are light bronze to more yellowish, the inner ones are pure white and wider. The pericarpel and the corolla are covered with scales, thorns and hairs. The elongated egg-shaped, red, tuberous fruits are quite densely thorn. They are up to 8 inches long.

Distribution and systematics

Selenicereus macdonaldiae is only known from cultivated specimens. The species has not yet been found in its range, indicated as Honduras in the first description .

The first description as Cereus macdonaldiae was published in 1853 by William Jackson Hooker . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose placed them in the genus Selenicereus in 1909 . A synonym is among others Cereus grusonianus Weing. (1905).
