Selim Beslagic

Selim Bešlagić (born February 23, 1942 in Tuzla , Independent State of Croatia , today Bosnia and Herzegovina ) is a Bosnian local politician. He was mayor of Tuzla during and after the Bosnian War .

Life

Bešlagić studied technology and chemistry in Tuzla. In 1990 he joined the Savez reformskih snaga Jugoslavije (SRSJ, Union of Reform Forces of Yugoslavia) from Ante Marković and won the elections in Tuzla. This later became part of the SDP BiH , to which he now belongs. The party is one of the few in Bosnia and Herzegovina that does not define itself according to ethnic criteria and has one of its strongholds in Tuzla. Bešlagić was re-elected twice and remained mayor of Tuzla until 2000. In addition, from 1996 he was a member of the Parliament of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina . From 2001 to 2003 he was President of the Canton of Tuzla .

Selim Bešlagić is married and has two children.

Awards

In 1995, Selim Bešlagić received the human rights award from the city of Weimar for his commitment to the peaceful coexistence of all population groups in Tuzla even after the war began. In 1998 Selim Bešlagić was proposed for the Nobel Peace Prize.
