Selonia is a student fraternity in Riga . At the University of Latvia , she is one of 23 members of the Presidential Convention . The Latin name recalls the historical settlement area of ​​the Selonen in southern Latvia and the old German name of Kurland as Zealand . According to the Baltic custom, the individual member is called Selonus ( Zealander ).

history

Selonia was donated to the Riga Polytechnic on November 24, 1880 . Her coat of arms sayings are Virtute et fide and Draugam un Tēvijai . The color is green-white-red.

founding

Selonia's founders were the members of the literary circle founded by Klavs Purins in 1878 and 19 Baltic Germans who had left Concordia Rigensis , Fraternitas Baltica , Rubonia and Borystenia. The Seloni were initially not accepted into the Chargierten-Convent in Riga because the Fraternitas Baltica, the Concordia Rigensis and the Rubonia had voted against it several times. That is why the Seloni fought hundreds of duels with representatives of the German-Baltic student associations . It was not until 1897 that the Rubonia and the Fraternitas Baltica voted for the Selonia to be accepted into the Chargierten-Convent. As the first Latvian connection, Selonia was registered in the Ch! C! added to Riga.

After the First World War

On November 18, 1918, the Selonia foxes hoisted the wine-red-white-wine-red Latvian national flag on the university building for the first time. When the Freikorps under Pawel Mikhailovich Bermondt-Awaloff sought to conquer Latvia, the F! C! C! the accession of all active members to the student company . Under the leadership of Nikolajs Grundmanis , a Selonia fox, she won many important fights. 40 Zealanders were awarded the Bear Slayer Order. The student company became the foundation of the Latvian Armed Forces and is still part of it today (excluding the active students).

In 1920 Selonia participated in the founding of the Presidential Convention . Many new Latvian connections were established, and many returned from exile . In 1923 Selonia bought its own convent house at Stabu – Straße 17. The upper floors were furnished for the Philistines , the ground floor for the active ones, the cellar for the "cosiness". A small stage serves the fox theater. Selonia also had its own orchestra with 30 members.

Another exile and homecoming

From 1950 the Zealand Association was based in New York City , from 1998 in Sydney . At the time of perestroika , members who had returned from emigration began to rebuild the league in Riga. New foxes have been added. After restoring the old Convents quarters , Selonia has been officially resident in Riga again since 2004. Today it is one of the largest and most influential connections in Latvia. More than 150 members live locally, more than 200 still abroad. Many Latvian politicians are members of the Selonia.

Selonia has been in an interview with the Kösener Seniors Convents Association since 2006 .
