Sempervivum gwersenii is a species of houseleek ( Sempervivum ) in the thick-leaf family(Crassulaceae).

Vegetative characteristics

Sempervivum gwersenii grows as a rosette plant with a diameter of up to 3 centimeters and forms long, brownish-red runners . The obovate to ovate, pointed, short, downy-haired leaves have a short, attached tip. They are bright green with a small red-brown tip. The leaf blade is about 15 millimeters long and 7.5 millimeters wide.

Generative characteristics

The flowering shoot reaches a length of up to 11 centimeters. It has light red leaves towards the tip that are about 11 millimeters long and 3 millimeters wide. The 13-fold flowers have a diameter of about 2 centimeters. Their reddish, about 6 millimeter long sepals are fused together over a length of up to 3 millimeters. The red petals have narrow, lighter edges. The stamens are lilac bright, the dust bag pink reddish and short stylus is orange light.

Systematics and distribution

Sempervivum gwersenii is widespread in the Caucasus at altitudes of around 2135 meters. The species is only known from the locality of the type.

The first description by Royden Samuel Wale was published in 1942. The species name honors Walter Edward Theodore Ingwersen (1885–1960), a plant collector in the Caucasus.
