Sempervivum kosaninii is a species of houseleek ( Sempervivum ) in the thick-leaf family(Crassulaceae).

Vegetative characteristics

Sempervivum kosaninii grows as a dense, flat, open rosette plant with a diameter of 6 to 8 centimeters. Their strong, leafy runners are up to 12 centimeters long and carry strong offshoots. The wrongly lanceolate, short pointed leaves are densely glandular and downy-haired. They are dark green with a purple tip and white base. The leaf blade is about 30 millimeters long and 9 millimeters wide. The edge of the leaf is covered with eyelashes that are twice as long as the normal downy hair.

Generative characteristics

The strong flower shoots reach a length of 15 to 20 centimeters. It has short, downy-haired leaves that are red in the upper part and are somewhat longer and narrower than those of the leaf rosette . The 12 to 14-fold flowers have a diameter of 2 to 3 centimeters. Their linear-lanceolate, somewhat pointed, 7 to 9 millimeter long sepals are fused together over a length of up to 5 millimeters. The linear, tapering petals have a length of 10 to 12 millimeters. Inside they are reddish purple in color, outside greenish with narrow white borders. The stamens are purple, the anthers bright red and pfriemliche stylus is purple something. The rounded, confluent nectar flakes are green.

Systematics and distribution

Sempervivum kosaninii is widespread in Macedonia on limestone at altitudes of 1800 to 2000 meters.

The first description by Robert Lloyd Praeger was published in 1930.

The species name honors the Serbian botanist and professor in Belgrade, Nedelyko Košanin (1874–1934).
