Lieutenant General Tzvi Tzur

Tzvi Tzur ( Hebrew צבי צור, * 1923 in Russia ; † December 28, 2004 ) was an Israeli lieutenant general , politician of the short-lived Rafi party and economic manager . From 1961 to 1963 he was the sixth chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces and briefly a member of the Knesset . As an economic manager, he ran several major Israeli public companies .

Life

Military career

Tzur, whose immigration ( Aliyah ) took place with his parents in 1925, graduated from elementary school and high school in Israel and joined the Zionist paramilitary underground organization Hagana as a teenager in 1939 .

During the Palestine war in 1948 he was commander of a battalion of the Givati Brigade and created at the time the Jeep - Platoon , which was known in the Revolutionary War as "Samson's Foxes" ( "Schu'alei Shimshon"). After attending a course for Administrative Studies in the United States in 1951, he was from 1952 to 1956 head of personnel of the armed forces before he to succeed Zvi Ayalon until his replacement by Meir Amit 1,958 commander of the Central Command was. He then completed further courses in France from 1958 to 1960 .

After his return to Israel, Tzur became deputy chief of staff in 1958 and, after his promotion to lieutenant general ( Rav-Aluf ) on January 1, 1961, succeeded Lieutenant general Chaim Laskow as chief of staff of the armed forces. He held this position until his replacement by Lieutenant General Yitzchak Rabin on January 1, 1964.

Economic managers and politicians

After retiring from active military service, Tzur became director general of the national water company Mekorot in 1964 and held this position until 1967. During this time, he was a member of the Knesset and in for the Rafi party from November 22 until his resignation on December 8, 1965 during this short period also member of the Constitutional, Legal Affairs and Justice Committee. After finishing his work for Mekorot, he became assistant to Defense Minister Moshe Dayan in 1967 and advised him until 1974 on questions of finance, resources, procurement, scientific development and independent arms production.

He then returned to business and was General Manager of Clal Industries from 1974 to 1985 and during this time also Deputy General Manager of Clal Israel for two years. After that, between 1986 and 1987 he was initially chairman of the board of directors of the state-owned telecommunications company Bezeq as well as deputy and alternating chairman of the board of the Israel Corporation , the largest Israeli holding company . He then served as CEO of the Israel Corporation owned shipping company Zim Integrated Shipping Services between 1987 and 1992 and was then CEO of the aircraft construction company Israel Aerospace Industries from 1993 to 1996 and, at the same time, briefly CEO of Petrochemical Industries and Carmel Studios in 1993.
