Senior Courts of England and Wales
The Senior Courts of England and Wales (originally Supreme Court of Judicature , from 1981 Supreme Court of England and Wales ) are the courts in the English legal system , below the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom and above the County Courts and Magistrates' Courts . The Judicature Act of 1873 simplified the complex and ineffective legal system in England and Wales , abolishing several courts dating from the Middle Ages . They were replaced by the Supreme Court of Judicature , consisting of the High Court of Justice and the Court of Appeal . With the Courts Act of 1971 , further courts were combined to form the Crown Courts , these became the third court of the Senior Courts . The High Court of Justice and the Court of Appeal are located in the Royal Courts of Justice , and Crown Courts are in 91 cities in England and Wales.
