Problems and requirements

Due to age or a handicap, certain movement sequences and motor skills that are required to operate standard mobile phones deteriorate. In addition, there is worsened visual acuity with often a restricted field of vision or visual field defects. Also the hearing is often limited.

  • Impaired vision or field of vision

Large, high-contrast and bright display, readable from all angles, not overloaded with functions.

  • Impaired motor skills

Such mobile phones have only a few, large buttons with clear feedback, so that they can also be operated with gloves. The key spacing is sufficiently large here. Furthermore, the devices are largely robust and insensitive to impacts, dust and splash water.

  • Impaired hearing

The impaired hearing ability of older people can also be addressed by choosing ring tones with frequencies that are not too high. Some senior cell phones are able to inductively couple to hearing aids (T-coil).

Older people also need other additional functions. An MP3 player for playing current music charts takes a back seat to the basic cell phone functions. A camera of even the simplest design, on the other hand, can be helpful for the immediate documentation of dangerous situations. Call recording functions and voice recognition (voice dialing) can be very useful. The technical skills of older users must be taken into account. Simple operation should have priority over too many technical functions ( hardware interfaces or software).

The individual circumstances are very different. There can therefore be no generally suitable mobile phone for senior citizens. There are similar requirements for younger people with disabilities, so the term senior mobile phone is not necessarily suitable. It is also a degradation; only a few elderly people would therefore like to use such a device for themselves.

Expressions

The senior cell phones currently on the market are divided into three categories.

  • Mobile phones with simplified haptic conditions, as well as visually simplified operation and a reduced range of functions (large-button phone).
  • Mobile phones with special extensions e.g. B. Telemedicine concept for seniors or people in need (EKG creation, GPS tracking).
  • Mobile phones that are used exclusively for emergency calls, location and dialing of fixed numbers. Such concepts are also offered as children's phones or pure emergency phones.

The different concepts are currently converging more and more.

Wireless pendant designated for domestic use, also called "home service call", consisting of a receiving station and an emergency call button necklace or a corresponding strap. When the emergency call button is pressed, the receiving station establishes a direct connection to the local accident emergency service. Range is currently around 300 meters outdoors to the base station.
