Sepp Linhart

Sepp Linhart (born May 12, 1944 in Pinkafeld ) is an Austrian Japanologist . As a professor he teaches at the University of Vienna . For his work he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun on a ribbon with golden rays .

Life

Linhart, who had already begun to deal with the Japanese language during his military service in the Austrian Armed Forces , studied Japanese studies, sociology and ethnology at the University of Vienna, where he received his doctorate as a Dr. phil initially worked as an assistant in 1970. In 1977 he was awarded the Cardinal Innitzer Prize for the Humanities . In 1978 he was appointed full professor and head of the Institute for Japanese Studies, and in 2001 he was appointed head of the Institute for East Asian Studies.

He has been visiting professor at the University of Kyoto , the International Research Center for Japanese Studies and the University of Paris VII .

From 1988 to 1991, Linhart served as both President of the European Association for Japanese Studies and Vice President of the Association for Social Science Studies in Japan . From 1993 to 1995 he was President of the Academic Working Group Japan .

In 2007 he was honored for his work with the Order of the Rising Sun on a ribbon with golden rays , in 2012 with the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art 1st Class .

research

Linhart researches mainly in the fields of modern social and cultural history of Japan. He became known in particular for his publications on Japanese everyday, leisure and game culture. It was one of his books on this subject, his 1998 Japanese Cultural History of the Game of Ken, which won him the Osaka Prefecture's Yamagata Bantō Prize in 2005.
