Sera Markoff

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sera Markoff (born July 6, 1971 in Minneapolis , USA) is an American astrophysicist and physics professor at the University of Amsterdam .

Career

Sera Markoff studied physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , where she completed her bachelor's degree in 1993. In 1996 she earned her Masters Degree in Physics from the University of Arizona in Theoretical Astrophysics. There she did her doctorate, also in the field of theoretical astrophysics, in 2000.

research

Markoff's research focuses on the boundary between astrophysics and particle physics . In particular, she deals with the processes in the immediate vicinity of compact objects such as black holes . She is a member of a number of large research collaborations: the Low-Frequency ARay ( LOFAR ), the Cherenkov Telescope Array, and the Event Horizon Telescope .

She was one of four representatives of the Event Horizon Telescope group who announced at a press conference on April 10, 2019 at the National Press Club in Washington, DC that the group had succeeded in capturing the first picture of a black hole, namely the super-massive black Loches in the center of the elliptical galaxy Messier 87 .
