Franz Seraphin Mandelzweig , also Franz Seraphin Mandlzweig , Franz Mandelzweig and Franz Mandlzweig ( 1792 in Prossnitz , Margraviate Moravia , Imperial Austria - April 16, 1864 in Brno , Margraviate Moravia, Imperial Austria) was an Austrian writer, playwright, translator and theater critic.

Life

The son of a wealthy merchant, received a careful upbringing and trained primarily in languages. After his parents lost their fortune, he moved to Olomouc and worked there as a merchant, but later gave up the business, became a language teacher for his extremely talented languages, and remained so for 40 years until the end of his life.

He gave lessons in French, Italian and English and contributed to the flourishing of the girls' secondary school that his two sisters had established in Olomouc. Later M. also acted as a sworn interpreter at the kk regional courts in criminal matters.

In addition to language studies, he was fond of, and not without success, literary work and mainly literary translations. Many of the pieces from French and English chosen and arranged by him with good taste were among the most popular stage pieces.

He was also active as a theater critic. For many years he wrote for the Bäuerle 's “Theater-Zeitung”, for Saphir ’s “Humoristen”, the “Theater-Chronik” and several foreign magazines. In his necrology a more detailed account of his literary work was promised, but it does not seem to have appeared so far.
