Serge (textile)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Serge in the original French meaning refers to a fabric that is woven in the so-called twill weave. In the German-speaking world, the term is mostly only used for special fabrics of this type, often a fine, high-quality wool fabric. Serge is often used in compound fabric names, for example wool serge and worsted serge in connection with the material used, or for feed serge specifying the use.

According to the French use of the term, "Serge de Nîmes" is a very robust twill weave fabric that was made in Nîmes . This was used as jeans fabric under the shortened name denim and was world famous.
