Serge Besnard (born April 6, 1949 in Paris , † August 27, 2002 ) was a French football player and coach.

Player career

Besnard began playing football at CA Montreuil near Paris, from where he moved to the traditional Parisian club Red Star FC in 1968 . As a teenager, he went through various French youth national teams and most recently played for the U-21s. During the season 1968/69 Besnard made his debut for the club supported by the communist billionaire Jean-Baptiste Doumeng ; However, he had to wait until the 1970/71 season for regular appearances and then became a regular player. At the same time he took over the role of the penalty taker of his team, with whom he was relegated to the second division in 1973, but achieved direct promotion a year later.

After he was relegated with the team again in 1975, he turned his back on Paris after seven years and signed with the first division club OSC Lille . With the club burdened by financial problems, he had to accept relegation to the second division in 1977 and achieved promotion a year later. Thanks to a first place in the table, he was also second division champion, which he had been with Paris in 1974. In 1979 the player went to FC Tours , where he was promoted to the first division a year later as a regular for the third time in his career. There he spent a season, during which he was on the pitch at every game. After that, however, he lost his regular seat and in 1983 also got down. The then 34-year-old decided to end his active career.

Coaching career

Immediately after the end of his career, Besnard took over the coaching position for the second team in Tours. In January 1985, he was the successor to Guy Briet to coach the professional team, which he should save from relegation from the first division. Although he failed in this task, he was allowed to keep his post until he was dismissed in January 1986 after a year in office. From 1988 he was coach of the third division team Stade Raphaëlois for three years . Besnard died in 2002 of complications from a heart attack.
